In 1920, a German engineer and pilot named Hellmuth Hirth, along with several other specialists, set up a technical workshop for the production of two-stroke engines in the city of Cannstatt. 26-year-old Hermann Mahle started his activity as the seventh member of the group along with the founders of the company called Versuchsbau Hellmuth Hirth in December 1920. This membership is known as the first step for the establishment of the highest German Mahle company. Soon, the economic needs of the group caused their activity to expand from testing engine components to setting up an industrial engine production line. At that time, all combustion engine pistons were made of cast iron. The Mahle group's decision to produce pistons from metal compounds and alloys is the first step in the growth and expansion of the Mahle brand.
