Oering
O-ring is a mechanical gasket for O-shaped sealing. O-rings can be used statically or dynamically. Dynamic applications include rotary pump shafts and cylinder hydraulic pistons.
O-rings are one of the most common washers in car design because they are cheap, very simple, reliable and easy to install. They can withstand tens of megapascals (thousands of horsepower).
Application of O-ring
Successful design to use O-Ring requires proper mechanical installation that can predict O-ring deformation and deformation. The mechanical pressure applied to the O-ring surfaces in contact with the fluid is calculated. Sealing is performed as long as the fluid pressure does not exceed the O-ring joint pressure. The fluid pressure is uniformly transmitted over the non-compressible O-ring surface, and the surface pressure rises with increasing pressure. Therefore, O-ring seals well as long as it is mechanically installed correctly. The main reason for the lack of good sealing of the o-rings is the protrusion of the paired parts. The sealant is designed to create a point of contact between the o-ring and the sealing surfaces. This puts a lot of local pressure.
Types of O-rings
